Overview

As a long-lasting option for replacing one or several missing teeth, dental implants allow for a natural restoration of your smile. At Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Alexandria, our skilled oral and maxillofacial surgeons specialize in offering high-quality dental implants for our Alexandria, VA patients. Drs. Edward Delgado and Michael Kuzmik both specialize in providing dental implant restorations that integrate with the jawbone to effectively replace missing teeth. Using titanium or biocompatible material, the implant screws will act as the roots of your missing teeth. Once the implants are properly in place, an implant crown, bridge, or denture can be connected to complete the restoration process.

Best Candidates

Several Alexandria, VA patients choose dental implant restorations over more traditional methods in order to ensure longer-lasting results. Once the dental implants are in place, they can be attached to a restoration that fits your needs and smile goals. Candidates for dental implants may be looking to replace a missing or damaged tooth following an extraction. Prior to recommending a dental implant, Drs. Delgado and Kuzmik will need to make sure that you have adequate bone and optimal oral health to undergo a restoration procedure. If you have any bone loss, you may need to receive a bone graft before you can be a candidate for a dental implant. Additionally, individuals who use tobacco products, are pregnant, or have specific medical conditions may not be a candidate for dental implants.

What To Expect

Before your dental implant procedure, images will be taken using our innovative iCat™ cone beam technology in order to assess the exact placement of the implant. Additionally, any necessary teeth will need to be extracted and a bone graft will be performed, if needed. Depending on the patient, tooth extraction and the placement of a dental implant may be performed within the same visit.

The procedure will begin by numbing the treatment areas, and sedation techniques may be included to keep you relaxed throughout the procedure. Utilizing guided implant techniques, an incision will be made in your gums and then the titanium post will be positioned within your jawbone. Some implants may require the gums to be sutured completely and in others, a portion of the implant will remain exposed above the gums. This procedure process will be repeated if multiple implants are being inserted in your mouth at the same time.

Following its placement, the dental implant will be allowed to fully integrate with your jaw over the next several months. After it is determined that your implant is stable and properly healed, you may be asked to return to your general dentist to have your custom restoration attached to the implant and adjusted for a comfortable, secure fit.

Recovery

After your implant surgery, you could experience some slight swelling in your mouth and lower face area. You may also notice some discomfort, bleeding, and bruising. A member of our team will be able to provide you with the appropriate aftercare instructions and let you know what you can expect during recovery. We will also offer instructions on how to care for your implant sites during the healing phase. Drs. Delgado and Kuzmik may also give you a prescription for pain relievers and antibiotics if needed. You will need to attend follow-up appointments so that we can ensure your implants are healing properly.

Following your implant procedure, it is essential to stick to a proper at-home oral care routine. Your implants will be cleaned just like your natural teeth, and you should continue to attend routine dental cleanings and exams.

Insurance Coverage

A portion or all of your dental implant procedure may be covered by your dental insurance, depending on your provider and your plan. Prior to recommending dental implants, a member of our team will contact your insurance company to determine your coverage and out-of-pocket costs. We also accept several forms of payment and medical financing through CareCredit®.
