Overview

As a bone grafting procedure commonly performed by our skilled board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeons, ridge preservation can help to prepare the bone socket for a future dental restoration. Drs. Edward Delgado and Michael Kuzmik provide this procedure in the Alexandria, VA facility in order to preserve gum and bone tissue, typically following a tooth extraction procedure. Additionally, ridge preservation may be necessary to help maintain the appearance and overall shape of your smile and mouth after a tooth extraction is performed. The procedure works by adding bone tissue to the tooth socket, allowing it to integrate to the existing bone. This creates a solid, healthy base for the placement of a dental implant. To learn more about ridge preservation and if you are a candidate, contact Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Alexandria to schedule your initial consultation with one of our experienced oral surgeons.

Best Candidates

Candidates for a ridge preservation procedure may be needing to undergo a simple or surgical tooth extraction and would like to maintain the appearance of their jaw. When you wish to replace your extracted tooth with a dental restoration, a ridge preservation procedure may be provided. After an extraction, bone loss can occur so it is may be necessary to enhance the bone level to ensure there is enough bone for a dental implant. Additionally, ridge preservation can help to prevent any future bone loss in order to maintain your facial shape. During a complete consultation at our facility, Drs. Delgado and Kuzmik will be better able to determine if ridge preservation is ideal for you and your dental needs.

What to Expect

Drs. Delgado and Kuzmik perform ridge preservation procedures in our innovative Alexandria facility. After determining that you are a candidate for this treatment, we will schedule a day for your procedure. Immediately following a tooth extraction, the ridge preservation process will begin by filling the sockets of the tooth with bone grafting material. In some cases, materials for tissue regeneration may also be utilized in order to promote a quicker healing response, as well as better integration for the bone tissue. Following the procedure, the incision will be sutured closed and the area will be thoroughly rinsed. Any necessary after-care instructions will be provided by our team to ensure proper healing.

Recovery

Throughout the recovery process, you may notice some inflammation or discomfort. These side effects can be treated with over-the-counter pain medications. If you experience any abnormal symptoms following your treatment, such as extreme pain, uncontrolled bleeding, or fever, you should contact our office for further instructions. Additionally, you may need to attend follow-up appointments so that our surgical team can evaluate how well you are healing and decide when you can receive your dental implant.

Insurance Coverage

In some instances, a ridge preservation procedure may be covered, at least in part, by your dental insurance provider. Prior to providing treatment, our team will contact your provider to determine your out-of-pocket costs and your insurance coverage. Our practice also accepts various payment types, including CareCredit® medical financing.

Alveolar Ridge Preservation

When tooth extraction is performed, it is critical to maintain the integrity of the surrounding bone in order to preserve your overall oral health. A ridge preservation procedure works by adding bone tissue to the area to allow for a stable foundation for a dental implant. Contact Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C.
