Overview

As an advanced technique, platelet-rich plasma (PRP) is utilized in several areas of the medical field, including to promote healing and regeneration of jawbone and gum tissue. At Drs. Delgado & Kuzmik P.C. Alexandria, board-certified oral and maxillofacial surgeon Dr. Michael Kuzmik uses PRP during several oral surgical procedures to ensure optimal results and effective recovery. As a minimally invasive treatment, PRP is safe and effective and can help to reduce the likelihood of an infection after an oral treatment. At our Alexandria, VA facility, we are happy to provide this innovative procedure option in order to ensure our patients receive the best possible outcomes. To learn more about PRP, contact our practice and schedule an initial consultation with Dr. Kuzmik.

Best Candidates

Containing a concentration of platelets and growth factors, PRP is created using your own blood and can help to stimulate the body’s natural healing process. Additionally, it can be beneficial in helping to regrow and regenerate bone and gum tissues after other oral surgeries that may include a reconstructive procedure, placement of a dental implant, a bone graft, and tooth extractions. When PRP is utilized, it can help you minimize the likelihood of bleeding, post-operative pain, and infection. After assessing your medical history, Dr. Kuzmik will be able to better identify if you would be a good candidate for PRP therapy along with your other surgical oral procedure.

What to expect

The entire process for PRP therapy is conducted within one of our spacious treatment rooms. It will begin by drawing an amount of blood from your arm. The blood is then placed in a centrifuge, which will separate other materials in your blood from the plasma. Additionally, other fluids and saline will be added in and extensively mixed. Once the platelet-rich plasma is ready, Dr. Kuzmik will use it in the necessary treatment areas during your oral surgery.

Follow-up

Naturally derived from your own body, PRP has a very minimal risk of causing any type of adverse or allergic reaction. After your procedure, Dr. Kuzmik and his team will be able to provide you with the necessary instructions to take care of your treatment site. You will also need to attend a follow-up appointment, depending on your surgical procedure, so that we can assess how the PRP is aiding in your healing process.

Insurance Coverage

Whether performed as its own procedure or in addition to another treatment, PRP may be covered by your dental insurance provider. To help identify your out-of-pocket costs, a member of our team will contact your provider to determine your coverage. We will also be able to inform you of the many payment methods we accept, as well as provide information on financial planning through CareCredit®.
